Travel Information
New Haven is conveniently located between New York City and Boston, with about 125 km (80 miles) to New York and 230 km (140 miles) to Boston. Shuttle rates given below were current in August 2016 and may depend on your pickup location as well on the time of the day.
Travel by Air
Note: For international travel, New York City’s John F. Kennedy (JFK) and Newark (EWR) airports are most convenient due to their extensive service to all major cities. For domestic travelers, Hartford’s Bradley Airport (90 km / 55 miles) with its wide choice of domestic destinations offers a time saving alternative.
Tweed-New Haven Airport
The closest airport to campus, Tweed-New Haven (HVN), is a short 10-minute taxi ride away from Yale. Currently, only US Airways commuter carrier services Tweed-New Haven, with connections through Philadelphia.
For taxi service to downtown: Metro Taxi, (203) 777-7777. Service from the airport to hotels and campus via taxi is approximately $15 to $20 one way.
Hartford: Bradley Airport
Bradley Airport (BDL) is located north of Hartford, about 1 hour from New Haven, 1½ hours during rush hour; serviced by all major airline carriers.
From Bradley to New Haven:
CT Limo, (800) 472-5466, www.ctlimo.com, $47 one way, per passenger; drop off in downtown New Haven (at Old Campus' Phelps Gate, located directly at the New Haven Green) or on Science Hill. Rental cars are also available from Bradley Airport.
New York Area Airports: Kennedy, LaGuardia, & Newark
All New York area airports are approximately 2 to 3 hours from campus (depending on traffic) and serviced by all major airlines.
From New York airports to New Haven:
1) Airport shuttles:
CT Limo (800) 472-5466, www.ctlimo.com, from Kennedy (JFK) and LaGuardia (LGA) Airports ($56 one way, per passenger) and Newark ($94 one way); drop off in downtown New Haven (at Old Campus' Phelps Gate, located directly at the New Haven Green) and select New Haven hotels. Note that while there are frequent shuttles to Kennedy and LaGuardia during the day, only few shuttles per day service Newark, which usually makes taking the train the better option (see below).

2) Train connections from Newark airport to New Haven:
From Newark, taking an Amtrak train is the easiest way to reach New Haven (travel time about 2:15 h). At the airport, take the AirTrain monorail to the airport’s Amtrak train station, then continue with Amtrak (www.amtrak.com) to New Haven’s Union Station. When searching online for connections, please choose EWR as departing station. Note that the last direct train to New Haven leaves Newark typically around 6 or 7 pm. For later plane arrivals, change trains in New York. Additional frequent train connections to New York’s Penn Station are provided by NJ Transit (www.njtransit.com).
Travel by Train
Amtrak (800) 872-7245, www.amtrak.com: The Acela Express offers expedient service between Boston and Washington DC. Amtrak services New Haven from Penn Station in New York. Average travel times by regular rail to New Haven are as follows: from Boston 3 hours, from New York 2 hours, from Philadelphia 4 hours.
The most convenient and cheapest way to travel to New Haven from downtown New York is by taking Metro-North Railroad (800) 638-7646, http://as0.mta.info/mnr/schedules/sched_form.cfm. Metro-North is a commuter train with lines running from Manhattan’s Grand Central Station to New Haven. One-way tickets can be bought at vending machines at the station right before departure and cost $14 off-peak and $18.50 peak.
Travel by Bus

Travel by Car
New Haven is located about 1½ hours from New York City, 2 hours from Providence, and 2 1/2 hours from Boston.
From Hartford and North (Boston area): I-91 South to Trumbull Street Exit #3.
From I-95 North (Providence) or South (New York City): from either direction take Exit 47 towards CT-34/New Haven.
