Norman E. Johnson joined Weyerhaeuser Company in 1956 as a forest entomologist. He began development of the Southern forestry research program in 1969 and became manager of tropical forestry research based in Balikpapan, Indonesia, in 1974. In 1976 he was appointed vice president of the Southeast Asia Region and president of the International Timber Company of Indonesia, a Weyerhaeuser subsidiary.
In January 1980 he became vice president of the North Carolina Region and was appointed vice president of research and engineering in January 1984. In 1988 he was named vice president for research, engineering and technology commercialization. In October 1990 he was appointed senior vice president of technology. He is responsible for the Corporate Research and Development and Weyerhaeuser Information Technology organizations.
Johnson received bachelor and master of science degrees in forestry from Oregon State University and a Ph.D. in forest entomology from the University of California at Berkeley. He is a graduate of the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School.
For two years he was on the faculty of the Department of Entomology at Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y. In addition, he is an adjunct professor for North Carolina State University School of Forestry and serves on advisory councils at Duke University, North Carolina State University, Oregon State University, University of California, University of Washington, and Washington State University.
Johnson is a foundation associate for the Pacific Science Center and serves on the Barrington Moore Memorial Committee of the Society of American Foresters. He also is a member of the advisory committee for The Forestry Research Institute of Malaysia and is an associate of The World Business Council for Sustainable Development. He serves on various committees with the U.S. Department of Agriculture and U.S. Agency for International Development.
He was a member of President Reagan's Agriculture and Forestry Mission to Honduras in 1982 and 1983, and to Zaire in 1985.
