Invited leading expert:
    Prof. Mark Reed, EE, has been invited as a leading
    expert in the field to give a short course on "Nano
    and Molecular Electronics" at the NSTI 2005 Nano,
    Industrial Impact Workshop, May 8 in Annaheim, CA.
 
New Yale-IBM facility dedicated:
    Dean Paul Fleury and Dr. Tilak Agerwala, Vice President,
    Systems, IBM Research, officiated at the ribbon-cutting
    ceremony April 27 of the new Yale-IBM Parallel Computing
    Facility in Becton 202. The new and sophisticated
    computing equipment at the Yale-IBM Parallel Computing
    Facility is a mini module of IBM’s Blue Gene, the
    world's most powerful high performance computing
    cluster being installed at Lawrence Livermore
    National Laboratory.
 
"American Scientists" stamps to be unveiled at Yale:
   Wed., May 4, 1:00 pm, at Luce Hall, the US Postal Service
   will unveil a series of four US postage stamps dedicated
   to four exceptional scientists: Yale’s Josiah Willard Gibbs 1863 Ph.D.,

   Richard Feynman, John von Neumann, and Barbara McCllintock.
   The event is open to the public. 

   President Richard Levin will speak at the ceremony and
   Dean Paul Fleury will be the master of ceremonies. Also
   speaking at the ceremony will be a member of the US Postal
   Service Board of Governors, the designer of the stamps,
   the consultant for the Gibbs stamp, and a relative of
   each scientist being honored, including a distant cousin
   of Gibb--neurologist John Willard Gibbs M.D.,Ph.D.

   Following the unveiling ceremony, a reception will be hosted
   in the Luce Hall Common Room by President Levin and Dean Fleury.
  
   It will be possible to acquire the new stamps and the
   special First Day of Issue cancellation at the event.
   The stamps go on sale at post offices nationwide May 5.

   We will also have a Gibbs exhibit in the exhibit space on
   the ground level of Dunham, courtesy of our Engineering
   Librarian Andrew Shimp.
 
EnvE grad student wins NSF fellowship:
   Anna Stirgwolt, a first year graduate student in Environmental
   Engineering, has won a NSF Graduate Research Fellowship
   for research on pathogen removal from water, especially
   by way of low cost, low energy wastewater treatment technologies
   to be put to use in developing countries. Anna Stirgwolt
   came to Yale from Johns Hopkins with a double major in
   Chemical Engineering and Spanish. Her adviser is
   Prof. Menachem Elimelech, EnvE.
 
Many years of experience at Yale:
   Among Yale staff who were honored April 11 at the annual
   Long-Service Recognition Dinner at the University Commons
   were Jayne Miller, AP, with 35 years and Arlene Ciociola, EE,
   with 25 years at Yale.

Engineering Student Council announces goals:
   The Council’s goals for the next academic year are:
    --New mentoring program between upper- and underclassmen.
    --Programs for engineers planning careers in industry, research, law, medicine,
       business, and the arts.
    --Increased involvement of Yale alumni.
    --Internship, study/work abroad, and other career programs.
    --Trips to local engineering, design, and industrial companies.
