   Prof. Ainissa Ramirez, ME, has received another patent,
   U.S. Patent 6,869,007 March 22, 2005, "Oxidation-resistant
   Reactive Solders and Brazes," with S. Jin and H. Mavoori.

Prof. Grober featured in Golf Digest:
   The June issue of Golf Digest features an article on
   Prof. Robert Grober, AP, and "sonic golf," his invention
   that registers the motion of the golf club as sound. The
   April/May issue of the Yale Alumni Magazine (circulation
   103,000) also features Prof. Grober’s invention. Prof. Grober
   will give a talk about his research that was the basis for his
   applications to golf clubs at the May 28 alumni reunion; his
   talk at the June 3 Yale reunion will be on energy.

Outstanding paper wins Ribbon Award:
   The Materials Research Society chose "Growth, Characterization,
   and Application of High Al-content AlGaN and High Power III-Nitride
   Ultraviolet Emitters" to receive its Ribbon Award. The lead
   author,
Zaiyuan Ren, is our 3rd year EE graduate student. His
   adviser is Prof. Jung Han. Other Yale EE authors are S.-R. Jeon,
   M. Gherasimova, G. Cui, and J. Han. Other authors were from
   Brown University; Lumileds Lighting, LLC, San Jose, CA; and
   Dong-A University, Korea.

   The paper will be designated by a ribbon logo in the table
   of contents of the 2004 Proceedings "Blue Book," on the first
   page of the paper within the book, and on the electronic version
   of the paper on the MRS website. Ribbon Awards are given to
   the top 5% of manuscripts of each symposium.
 
ME senior receives national medal:
  
Justin Elliott ’05 has been commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant
   in the Air Force and was awarded the Society of American
   Military Engineers 2005 R.O.T.C. Bronze Medal for being
   "the outstanding Senior engineering student of the Air
   Force Reserve Officers Training Corps" (only one such medal
   is awarded each year). He was also the only student in
   the Connecticut ROTC detachment to receive the Blue Chip
   award. After graduation, Elliot, who has been piloting planes
   since he was 16, leaves for fighter pilot and then test pilot
   training at Laughlin Air Force base in Texas. His objective
   is to become an astronaut. Elliott was on the Yale men’s
   swim team for 3 years.

One year at NYAS at no cost:
   Prof. David LaVan, ME, an organizer of a recent
   Nanobiotechnology discussion group event at the New
   York Academy of Science, NYAS, informs that Yale students
   and post-docs are eligible for a year's free membership
   in NYAS events through a program called the Science
   Alliance. NYAS offers events almost every week, and
   the Nanobiotechnology group organizes bi-monthly events.

   held Mon., May 23, 2:30 pm, in Davies Auditorium.
