Faculty of Engineering Bulletin for Monday, June 3, 2002

Enjoy a look:
The Commencement Engineering Reception was a resounding
success. Graduating Engineering Prize winners and their beaming
parents, relatives, and friends enjoyed chocolate dipped strawberries
and mingled with faculty members, some in their academic regalia
adding the perfect touch to the occasion. Becton Faculty Lounge
was filled to capacity when Dean Paul Fleury, assisted by
Prof. Roman Kuc, awarded the prizes. Take a look at some
outstanding new Yale engineering alumni at
    www.eng.yale.edu/news/prize_winners_02.htm

Incoming graduate students:
Our Graduate Admissions Committee selected our new crop of
graduate students from a pool of ~540 applicants. Our new graduate
students are from the U.S. and from Canada, Belgium, Greece,
India, Korea, New Zealand, the Peoples Republic of China, Singapore,
and Vietnam. The Admissions Committee consisted of Prof. Eric
Altman, ChE; Prof. Michel Devoret, AP; Prof. Menachem
    Elimelech, ChE; Prof. Jung Han, EE; Prof. Yiorgos Makris, EE & CS;
    Prof. Kumpati Narendra, EE; Prof. Robert Schoelkopf, AP & Phys;
Prof. Mitchell Smooke, ME; Prof. Lawrence Staib, Diagnostic
Radiology & EE; and Prof. Wei Tong, ME. The Graduate Admissions
Committee was chaired by Prof. John Walz, ChE.

Wine and neural networks:
     Manuel Duarte-Mermoud '85 M.S., '86 M.Phil., '88 Ph.D.,
now a professor of electrical engineering at the University of Chile,
persuaded Prof. Kumpati Narendra, EE, to assist with
developing an intelligent instrumentation system based on
artificial neural networks to identify grape varieties from which
Chilean Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay wines are produced.
The project is sponsored by the Chilean National Committee of
Science and Technology, University of Chile, and U.S.
companies. Prof. Narendra, a wine connoisseur, is looking
forward to sampling Chilean wines also with some alumni
when he is in Santiago in December.

Before then, Prof. Narendra will visit a number of universities
in India (June and October) and give plenary talks at international
conferences in Japan (August) and in Ireland, Scotland, and
     Singapore (September).

Speaking of travel:
Prof. Marshall Long, ME, is just back from a most enjoyable
~5,000-mile ride to New Mexico and back on his BMW R1150GS.

Congratulations!
Jason Kroon, Financial Assistant, is getting married June 1 to
Sara Abbe of Hamden, whom he met when both were undergraduates
at the University of Michigan. The bride received her Master of
Divinity degree from the Yale Divinity School a week ago and will
be seeking a position as a chaplain or minister. The newlyweds
will spend their honeymoon in Hawaii.

If you hear of anything:
Denis Lobov, who has ably assisted the Faculty of Engineering
with financial accounting since August 2000, is leaving us May 31.
Mr. Lobov and his wife, Natalia, have two sons, three-year old
Nikolai and one-year old Mikhail. Mr. Lobov would welcome leads
about financial positions in the area. He has six years experience
in financial accounting and graduated from Albertus Magnus with
     honors last December, 2001.

Statistics remind us:
Our website, www.eng.yale.edu, had 3.6 million requests between
Jan. 1 and May 24, an average of 25,676 hits per day. Such interest
is reason enough to keep our information up to date. Please check
your homepage and the other pages related to your research and
contact our Webmaster (right from each web page) if anything
     needs to be revised.

Do you have what they need?
Josh Collins '94 ChE, Senior Manager, Tungsten Technology, Novellus
Systems, Inc., is looking for process engineers to work on CVD tungsten
and related deposition systems. He needs Ph.D.'s with "excellent
hands-on experimental skills, the ability to design and drive complex
development projects, and solid fundamental skills in transport
phenomena, reaction kinetics, and semiconductor technology."

Have a great summer!
The next issue of our Engineering Bulletin will reach you in
    late August.
