Prof. Apfel to receive Graduate Mentor Award:
At the 2002 Commencement Convocation, Prof. Robert Apfel,
Robert Higgin Professor of Mechanical Engineering, will receive
a Graduate Student Assembly Award, established to honor faculty
members who provide outstanding inspiration, encouragement,
and academic direction to their students. This past March, appreciation
for Prof. Apfel's mentoring was memorably expressed by 36 students,
post docs, and colleagues who came for a rollicking "Golden Apfel
Celebration" in honor of Prof. Apfel's 59th birthday. As a lasting
birthday present "in recognition of his phenomenal mentorship,"
his former students decided to establish a Robert E. Apfel Graduate
Fellowship in Acoustics for students in acoustics, mechanical
engineering, or biomedical engineering at Yale. The spiritus movens
of the Celebration and Fellowship initiatives was Christy (Smith) Holland '89 Ph.D.,
ably assisted by Y.C. Lo '87 Ph.D. and Mark Roos '83 Ph.D. Take a look.

Ph.D. thesis leads to NASA project:
Aviation Week and Space Technology reports April 29, p. 70,
that NASA will rely on thrust in the microN range as the first
step towards detecting gravity waves. $2.6 M will go to Busek, Inc.
of Natick, MA, for creating a thruster based on electrostatic
acceleration of highly charged nanodrops, based on Manuel Gamero '00 Ph.D.
doctoral thesis (Advisor: Prof. Juan de la Mora, ME). Dr. Gamero's
thesis, "The Transfer of Ions and Chared Nanoparticles from Solution
to the Gas Phase in Electrosprays," had received the 2001 Friedlander
Award from the American Association of Aerosol Research.

2nd Yale Engineering Golf Tournament:
Prof. Alessandro Gomez, ME, initiated it last year and
Prof. Mitchell Smooke, ME, organized it this year with the
assistance of Ms. Sandy Tranquilli, Graduate Studies Office.
Eight faculty and 26 graduate students enjoyed themselves at
the Yale Golf Course. Channel 30 interviewed some of the
students and planned to air the segment 5/17 at 6:15 pm.
