Welcome:
Sandra Yulke, joined us Jan. 7 as our Development Officer. Ms. Yulke earned an S. B. (chemistry) and an S.M. (geochemistry) at MIT and an M.S. (materials science and engineering) from the University of Wisconsin at Madison. She has done science research and served as Senior Liaison officer between MIT and major industrial companies in U.S., Europe, and in Siberia (she speaks Russian as well as French, Italian, and German). Ms. Yulke's office is in Dunham 231, 432-6760. 
 
Undergraduate curriculum review:
In 2001, President Richard Levin appointed a Committee on Yale College Education to conduct a comprehensive curriculum review and propose recommendations for a Yale education for the 21st century. Prof. Charles Ahn, AP & Phys, serves on the Steering Committee headed Dean Richard Brodhead. Prof. Charles Ahn and Prof. Gary Haller, ChE & Chem, serve on the Engineering/Science and Technology for Non-Science Majors Working Group (other Working Groups: Biomedical Education, Physical Sciences, Social and International Studies, Humanities and the Arts). 
 
Within the Faculty of Engineering, Electrical Engineering has a curriculum review committee: Prof. Peter Kindlmann, EE, Prof. Roman Kuc, EE, Prof. Yiorgos Makris, EE & CS, Prof. Edmund Yeh, EE, Prof. Rimas Vaisnys, EE & EEB, Chair, and Aryesh Mukherjee '03 and Rameez Saleh '02.
 
An early start:
The Materials Research Society has awarded Vanessa Wood '05 an Undergraduate Materials Research Initiative (MRS UMRI) grant to examine ferroelectric domains in epitaxial Pb(ZrTi)O3 thin films. She is doing her research in the lab of Prof. Charles Ahn, AP & Phys.

Summer research programs for undergrads:
-The University of Connecticut Health Center, Farmington, CT, offers 10-week research internships under the guidance of a professor plus a $3,000 stipend to undergraduates who have an interest in the biomedical sciences and will have completed their sophomore year by summer. -2002 Summer Undergraduate Program in Engineering Research at Berkeley-Information Technology, SUPERB-IT, offers a 8-week NSF research apprenticeship for students who will have completed the junior year. Students receive a stipend, room and board, and a travel allowance to Berkeley, CA. Students who are the first generation in their family to pursue a college education are especially welcome. For those with an entrepreneurial bent:
Prizes total $100,000. Deadline: Feb. 3. Challenge: Propose a great business plan for a for-profit or a non-profit enterprise. Teams must include a Yale student, staff, or faculty member. The next teambuilders/informational sessions are (tentatively) Jan 23 and 30. Most people come without specific ideas and brainstorm at the teambuilders session with others about new ventures. The Y50K Entrepreneurship Competition is un by the Yale Entrepreneurial Society, YES, together with the Yale School of Management, Yale Office of New Haven and State Affairs, and several local and national sponsors. Condolences to Custodial Services:
Theresa Smith, a custodian in Mason Laboratory, was found dead at her home December 31. She had worked at Yale since 1987. She leaves a grieving expecting daughter, son-in-law, and three sisters.
 
Martin Luther King Jr. Day:
Monday, Jan. 21, is a legal holiday. No classes will be held.
