University of Illinois and is working in the Environmental
Engineering Program with Prof. Menachem Elimelech.

Welcome to Mechanical Engineering:
Faculty:
Dr. Corey O'Hern has joined us as Assistant Professor of
Mechanical Engineering. Previously, he was a Postdoctoral
Research Fellow in the Department of Physics at the James
Franck Institute, University of Chicago, and a Postdoctoral
Research Fellow in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry,
UCLA.

Dr. Udo Schwarz has joined us as Associate Professor of Mechanical
Engineering. Previously, he held a Postdoctoral Research position
in the Materials Science Division, Lawrence National Laboratory,
University of California, Berkeley.

Researcher:
Dr. Xiquan Jiang, Visiting Fellow, is Associate Professor in the
Department of Modern Mechanics at the University of Science
and Technology of China, Hefei, Anhui P.R. China.

National Academy of Engineering invited 100:
The National Academy of Engineering invited Prof. Charles Ahn, AP,
and Prof. Robert Schoelkopf, AP, to participate in the Eighth
Annual Symposium on the Frontiers of Engineering in Irvine, CA,
Sept. 18-21. NAE makes the selection after a competitive nomination
and selection process and then "brings together 100 of the nation's
outstanding young engineers (ages 30-45) from industry, academia,
and government to discuss pioneering technical work and leading-edge
research in various engineering fields and industry sectors."
Prof. Schoelkopf has also been invited to chair a session at next
year's symposium.

Reception to welcome new faculty and staff:
Dean Fleury requests the pleasure of the company of Faculty of Engineering faculty, staff, researchers, and their spouse/guest
Fri., Sept. 27, 5:00 pm-7:00 pm, at The Quinnipiack Club,
221 Church Street. RSVP: 432-4222.

 Engineering Student Center:
An Engineering Student Center, ESC (!), is coming into being in Dunham 107 and is accessible to undergraduates taking Engineering courses as well as to our faculty and staff. At present, ESC offers a whiteboard, a round table, and computers but will evolve in response to student input by way of the Engineering Student Council (members TBA) into a place for undergraduates to work together, hold organization meetings, meet with recruiters, etc. Visit ESC and then start brainstorming.

Commit to one hour a week:
Volunteer in New Haven schools. Info session:
Tues., Sept 24, 5:30, HGS 119.
