Staff:
Tanis Lea, Administrative Assistant in Applied Physics, started 7/15. Before coming to Yale, Ms. Lea had worked for 12 years as an administrative legal assistant at several Connecticut companies.
 
New staff in the Business Office: 
Joanne Dupee, Administrative Assistant, Business Office, started 6/24. Before joining us Ms. Dupee had worked in the travel industry. 
 
Final doctoral examination: 
Fri., Aug. 23, Stefano Russo, "Experimental Study of Laminar Spray Flames at Moderately High Pressures." Committee: Prof. Alessandro Gomez, Prof. Boa-The Chu, Prof. Daniel Rosner.
 
Orientation for Graduate Students:
Orientation for 30 incoming graduate students (AP-5, BME- 2, ChE-7, EE-11, ENVE-3, ME-2) was held Fri., Aug. 30. The new students are from U.S. and Belgium, Canada, China, Greece, India, Korea, Kuwait, New Zealand, Singapore, and Vietnam. Attending the Orientation were Paul Fleury, Dean of Engineering, Prof. Mitchell Smooke, Director of Graduate Studies, Mr. George Andrews, Office of Environmental Safety, Andrew Shimp, Engineering Librarian, Ms. Lieyang Zhou, IT/Computer Support, Ms. Cara Gibilisco, Graduate Registrar, and Ms. Sandra Tranquilly, Assistant.
 
Dean meets with Freshmen and parents: 
Dean Paul Fleury will spend an hour with first-year students and their parents in Davies Auditorium Sat., Aug. 31, 3:15-4:15 pm.
 
Engineering students welcome new students:
Undergrads, with an assist from grad students, are embarking on a new annual tradition, the Engineering Students for New Students Open House, Mon., Sept. 2, 3:00-3:30 pm in the Becton Faculty Lounge. New students will be welcomed by smiling faces (including Mrs. Jane Boone, Coordinator of Educational Affairs and of the Select Program in Engineering, and Ms. Joni Huff, Undergraduate Career Services), refreshments, and a "face book" of upperclassmen who have volunteered to be mentors for Engineering Freshmen. (The second part of this students-for students open house happens on Friday the 13th and includes serious eats and the beaming presence of faculty and staff, of which more in the next Bulletin). 
 
Engineering Orientation:
The Engineering Orientation for incoming students will be in Davies Auditorium, Becton Center, Mon., 3:30-5:00 pm, and will feature a presentation by Prof. Roman Kuc, Director of Educational Affairs. After the presentation, students will be able to tour the facilities or consult with the Directors of Undergraduate Studies Prof. Robert Grober, AP, Prof. James Duncan, BME, Prof. Peter Kindlmann, EE, Prof. Roger Ely, EnvE, and Prof. Mitchell Smooke, ME.
 
And again, at the Academic Fair:
First year students will have another opportunity to consult with Engineering faculty about courses and programs Tues., Sept. 3, 2:00-4:00 pm, William L. Harness Hall.
