Computational Vision and Control Vision Lunch Seminar
"Dynamics and Control of Juggling," Prof. Rodolphe Sepulchre,
Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science,
University of Liège, Belgium.
Host Prof. A. Stephen Morse.

Prof. Reed elected American Physical Society Fellow
Prof. Mark Reed, EE, has been elected Fellow of the American
Physical Society. Prof. Reed was chosen "For pioneering
contributions to the investigation of electronic transport in
quantum confined heterojunction devices, nanostructures
and molecular scale systems." Not more than .5% of the

'98 AP wins Collegiate Inventors Competition
One of the six 2002 winners (198 entries) of the international
Collegiate Inventors Competition is Jeffrey Anker '98, currently
finishing his Ph.D. in applied physics at the University of Michigan.
His winning entry was MagMOONs, Magnetically Modulated Optical
Nanoprobes. When used in place of traditional chemical dyes, these
nanoprobes can be magnetically prompted to flash, making the
tested material clearly visible.

Each winner received a medal, $20,000 in cash, a $2,000 gift
certificate and a pocket computer from Hewlett-Packard (a sponsor),
and four Goodyear tires (a sponsor). Faculty advisers won $10,000
honorariums.

We have had Collegiate Inventors Competition winners in 1993
(Adviser Prof. T.P. Ma, EE), 1996 (Prof. Peter Kindlmann, EE),
1998 (Prof. T.P. Ma), and 1999 (Dr. Nathan Delson, ME).

The next deadline for entry to the Competition is June 1, 2003.

Engineering students eligible for internship in DC:
Juniors, Seniors, and recent engineering grads with leadership
skills are invited to apply for Internships for Students of Engineering
(WISE). The interns will experience how the government deals
with technological issues and how engineers contribute to legislative
and regulatory policy decisions. Deadline for the June to August 2003
internship is Dec. 9. See www.wise-intern.org
Faculty are presently being recruited for the 10-week summer
program in 2004 (the stipend for the 2003 program is $17,500).
