   "Functional Materials and Devices via Electrically Driven
   Assembly of Colloidal Particles," Prof. Orlin D. Velev,
   Chemical Engineering, North Carolina State University.

At the Carnegie Institution in Washington:
   Prof. Jerry Woodall, EE, and four other 2001 National
   Medal of Technology Laureates interacted with 2001 winners
   of the Discovery Channel Young Scientist Challenge, the
   Internet Science & Technology Fair, and the Intel Science
   Talent Search (Mariangela Lisanti, who did her prize-winning
   work in Becton under the guidance of Prof. Mark Reed, EE)
   and an audience of ~400 middle and high schools teachers
   and students at the Student Technology Roundtable Sept. 19.
   The event was sponsored by the Foundation for the Study
   of America's Technology Leadership (FSATL) in cooperation
   with the Technology Administration (TA) of the U.S.
   Department of Commerce. A professionally edited, entertaining
   and informative presentation of the event was made into
   a CD for distribution to middle and high school classes.

For research on water reuse:
   Prof. Menachem Elimelech, EnvE/ChE, was appointed
   ExxonMobil Chair Professor this past summer by the
   Singapore Economic Development Board and the National
   University of Singapore. This professorship recognizes
   an individual who has significantly contributed to an area
   of research of major importance to Singapore. Singapore,
   a country of 4.2 million people, suffers from a serious
   water shortage and has embarked on a comprehensive
   research program in advanced membrane technology
   to produce high quality water from sources such as
   seawater and used domestic water. Prof. Elimelech did
   research last July and August at the National University
   of Singapore on advanced membrane technology for
   water reclamation and reuse.
 
YES Y50K Educational Session:
   Representatives from Mintz Levin will speak on "Legal
   Issues in Entrepreneurship" (finance/exit strategies,
   intellectual property). Mon., Oct. 21, 8:00-10:00 pm, WLH 203.
 
   Engineering majors are invited to think up a good concept
   for a new service or product and submit a two-page executive
   summary to the Yale Entrepreneurial Society YES, by Nov. 3;
   winning entries will split $2,000. The big competition will be
   in the spring, when teams will compete with their business
   plans for $50,000 in cash and $50,000 in gifts.
