Our new Senior
Administrator:
Harley Pretty
joined us April 3 as Senior
Administrator. Mr. Pretty has been at Yale since 1981,
initially working part-time while finishing his
business administration degree at Quinnipiac College
(now, University). Later, he assumed increasing
responsibilities in the Physics Department and the
Safety Office. He left for Princeton in 1998 to
serve as the Manager/Director of Operations of
a laboratory but came back in 2001 as the
Administrator of the Physics Department. Mr. Pretty
has done graduate work in the MBA program at
the University of New Haven and serves on Hamden's
Board of Youth Hockey and Board of Youth Lacrosse;
he also coaches Lacrosse for 3rd and 4th graders.
Harley and Elizabeth Pretty are the parents of
Jenny, 15, Harley, 13, and Trevor, 9.
“Outstanding Student”

the U.S.) to receive a 2005 National (Chinese)
Outstanding Overseas Student Scholarship" of
$5,000 from the China Scholarship Council,
affiliated with China’s Ministry of Education.
Xiang’s Adviser is Prof. David LaVan, ME.
Winners:
Betsy Scherzer ’07
and Caroline Howe ’07,
EnvE students, have won Morris K. Udall Fellowships

potential in the environmental field.
“Girls in Engineering
Day”:
Tues., April 11, 9:30 am-1:30 pm, 75 Greater
New Haven Area high school students will be
touring our labs, listening to our female
engineering majors discuss their decision to
major in engineering, doing projects, and
attending presentations about brain shift
during neurosurgery, squishy physics, lasers
and medicine, how failure leads to success,
and more.
Pick up insights and
skills:
Students and faculty are invited to a two-part
“Interactive Seminar on Practical Business Skills”
by Dr. Stephen Kramer, Technology Manager, Pratt & Whitney.
