Condensed Matter Physics Seminar:
   "Antiferromagnetism on the Pyrochlore Lattice A,"
   Prof. Shivaji L. Sondhi, Princeton University.

Appointed:
   President Richard Levin has appointed Prof. Menachem
   Elimelech,
Roberto C. Goizueta Professor of Chemical
   Engineering and Director of the Environmental Engineering
   Program, as the Chair of the Department of Chemical
   Engineering. Prof. Elimelech will continue to serve
   as the Director of the Environmental Engineering Program.
 
Promoted:
   Prof. Jerzy Blawzdziewicz has been promoted to
   Associate Professor in Mechanical Engineering.

   Prof. Jung Han has been promoted to Professor
   in Electrical Engineering.
 
Congratulations:
   Prof. David and Mrs. Lily LaVan welcomed into their
   life a baby girl, Sarah Simon LaVan, their firstborn,
   on July 7.
 
Freshman orientation:
   113 first-year students attended the Engineering
   Orientation August 29. They expressed the following
   interests [most had more than one]:

Engineering and CS Databases and other tools:

   Mon., Sept. 5, 3:00 pm, the Engineering Library
   will brief you on a variety of online databases
   for finding books, journal articles, and full-text
   papers. Also, take a tour on what else is available
   at our Engineering Library Fri., Sept. 9, 2:00 pm.
 
Sustainability projects:
   In light of Yale's renewed emphasis on a more
   sustainable University environment, students are
   invited to help solve technical problems and design
   solutions [for possible credit] in environmental
   management, energy systems, intermodal transportation,
   and infrastructure design and construction. If you
   are interested in an independent sustainability
   project, contact Mr. Glenn Weston-Murphy, ME,

Learn about management consulting:
   The Boston Consulting Group will conduct a
   presentation and host a reception Wed., Sept. 7, 7:00 pm,
   in the College Room of the downtown Omni Hotel for
   undergraduates who wish to learn about management
   consulting. For specifics, contact <striker.rory@bcg.com>

If you wish to send water:
   Prof. Ainissa Ramirez, ME, could take the case
   of bottled water you donate to the New Have Armory,
   290 Goffe Street, if you drop it off at her office,
   Becton 209, by Fri., Sept 9. Or you can give her
   $7.00 and she will pick up a case on your behalf
   to send to Hurricane Katrina's victims.
