SPEAKERS SCHEDULE

This weekly bulletin is intended for the faculty, students, and staff in Applied Physics, Biomedical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering at Yale University and for our alumni.

We will be happy to e-mail an excerpted version of the Engineering Bulletin (leaving out
items of strictly internal interest) to interested individuals outside of the Yale University community (see bottom of page).

Faculty of Engineering Bulletin for Monday, September 1, 2003

Week in week out:
Welcome back, Engineering Bulletin readers, and welcome, new subscribers, to our weekly Engineering Bulletin. Our Bulletin seeks to keep you aware of what goes on within the Faculty of Engineering. You are invited to write to <engineering@yale.edu> about events or information that might be of interest to the faculty, students, researchers, or staff of our Engineering community. In the weeks to come, along with information of current interest you will receive the news and information that have accumulated since our last issue in June.

A new department

The Faculty of Engineering now has a Department of Biomedical Engineering. The Chair of the new department is W. Mark Saltzman, Goizueta Foundation Professor of Chemical and Biomedical Engineering. Prof. James Duncan, Diagnostic Radiology/EE, is DUS.

New faculty:
-Sohrab Ismail-Beigi, Assistant Professor of Applied Physics and Physics. Ph.D. 2000 MIT.
Research interests:
Computational condensed matter physics applied to optical properties, photo-induced structural change, and photoluminescence in molecules, nanotubes, and defects in solids; electronic and mechanical properties of nanotubes, nanowires, and solids; surfaces and interfaces.
Other interests: Ballroom dancing and chess.

-Erin Lavik, Assistant Professor of Biomedical and Chemical Engineering. Sc.D. 2001 MIT.
Research interests: Biomaterials, synthesis of new degradable polymers; tissue engineering; spinal cord repair; retinal regeneration; drug delivery for optic nerve preservation and repair.
Other interests: Playwriting (produced), hiking, fishing, and "a Nova Scotia duck tolling retriever with, perhaps, a little Britanny, named Wally."

Prof. Yeh receives two major awards:
YIP Award: Prof. Edmund Yeh, EE/CS, has won the Army Research Office (ARO) Young Investigator Program (YIP) Award for 2003. This award provides $150,000 in research grants over a three-year period. The title of the ARO proposal is "Throughput and Delay Optimization in Wireless Networks: A Fundamental Approach."

ITR Grant: Prof. Yeh has also received a National Science Foundation (NSF) Information Technology Research (ITR) grant jointly with Prof. Randall Berry of Northwestern University for "Fundamental Performance Trade-offs for Ad-hoc Networks." Yale portion of the grant provides $115,000 over a three-year period.

Prof. Yeh will use these grants to develop a new integrated, cross-layer approach to efficient resource allocation in multi-hop wireless communication networks.

Fi
nal doctoral examinations:
-June 19, Robert Koudelka: "Novel High Speed Light Emitting Devices." Committee: Prof. Jerry Woodall, Prof. T.P. Ma, and Prof. Janet Pan.

-July 25, Petia Vlahovska: "Dynamics of a Surfactant-Covered Drop and the Non-Newtonian Rheology of Emulsions." Committee: Prof. Michael Loewenberg, Prof. John Walz, and Prof. Jerzy Blawzdziewicz.

Prospective majors or "just curious", welcome:
Undergrads, come to Davies Auditorium, Becton Center, Mon., Sept. 1, 3:30 pm, for an overview (with visuals) of "Engineering and Applied Science at Yale" by the Director of Educational Affairs for Engineering, for Q&A with DUSs in Applied Physics, Biomedical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Computer Science, and a tour of Engineering facilities. Refreshments? But of course.

Congratulations:
June 6, Mr. Senen Antunez, Financial Assistant, and Mrs. Patricia Antunez became the parents of a second son, Guillermo. Their first son, Joaquin, was born February 5, 2001.

Engineering Library:
Orientation Tour: Thurs., Sept. 4, 4:00 pm. Introduction to Engineering and Computer Science Databases.

Workshop: Fri., Sept. 5, 12:00 noon. Introduction to a variety of online databases for finding books, journal articles and full-text papers.

New Orange Book:
The new Orange Book will reach us at the end of the week. In the meantime, visit <www.eng.yale.edu/undergraduate/Guide.htm>

Free to the first:
A DVD player and battery for an IBM thinkpad T20 will go to the first Yale person who contacts Prof. A. Stephen Morse, EE/CS.
