Congratulations:
     Prof. Charles Ahn, AP& Physics, has been selected to receive
    one of AVS Science and Technology Society's premier honors,
    the Peter Mark Memorial Award for 2003. This award honors
    a young scientist or engineer for outstanding theoretical or
    experimental work. Prof. Ahn was singled out "For his pioneering
    work on epitaxial complex oxide thin film heterostructures."
    The award consists of an invited lecture at the AVS 50th
    International Symposium, a $6,500 cash prize (plus reimbursement
    of travel expenses), and a certificate. Prof. Ahn will deliver his
    lecture and accept the award at the AVS 50th International
    Symposium in Baltimore, MD, Nov. 2003.
 
Prof. Kuc to be featured on Discovery Channel:
    "Wild Tech," a new series on the Discovery Channel, is developing
    a seven-part documentary series on the differences and similarities
    between nature and technology in the areas of speed, navigation,
    communication, and sight. On June 18, Prof. Roman Kuc, EE,
    will be interviewed in his Intelligent Sensors Lab for the segment
    on machines that see with sound. No date has yet been set for
    the airing of this documentary series.
 
Engineering facilities renovations accelerate:
    Mr. Joe Carvalho has joined us June 2 as the new Coordinator
    for Engineering Facilities Project Management. He will serve as
    facilitator between the Faculty of Engineering and Yale University
    Planning and Project Management groups for the renovations
    of Engineering facilities and for the new Engineering building.
    He will also assist with the current updating of our office space
    allocations and moveable equipment inventory.
 
    Mr. Carvalho received his ME degree from the Bridgeport Engineering
    Institute. He has worked in wafer semiconductors instrumentation
    at Perkin Elmer Corp., Wilton, industrial 6-degree robotics at
    Unimation, Inc., Bethel, CT, and precious metals and powders
    R&D at Handy and Harman, Fairfield. At US Surgical, he was
    the project engineer for R&D on suture materials and for lab
    renovation and equipment. He worked at GE Panametrics
    and at Cosa Instrument as the East Coast regional manager for
    10 years. He was also a private consultant on process/environmental/
    maintenance cost analysis and appropriate technology. He has
    worked at Yale on cooling/heating and data acquisition systems,
    including building automation and energy savings programs.
 
    Mr. Carvalho lives in Shelton with his wife, Laurie, a Shisheido
    sales manager for Eastern New York State and Connecticut.
    Their son will start on his M.S. in engineering at UCONN in
    the fall and their daughter will be a Junior at the University
    of Rhode Island. A note to our golfers: Mr. Carvalho loves the
    sport and has enjoyed it in many places, including Hawaii.

Engineering Summer Softball Team wins 25-5:
    Last Mon., June 2, the Engineering Summer Softball Team trounced
    the New Haven and State Affairs team. Engineering softball coach
    Jeffrey McCutcheon, of Prof. Menachem Elimelech's Membrane Group,
    reports: "The Engineering team got off to a hot start with a 7 run
    first inning and followed up with some defensive skill, retiring the
    opposing team 1-2-3 in the bottom of the first. Things only got better
    for the engineering team, as they routed the grossly overmatched
    New Haven and State Affairs team by a final score of 25-5. Jeff
    McCutcheon (1-0) picked up the win with 5 IP, 2 ER. Tyler Radnieki
    was MVP for the game, going 5 for 6 with 1 home run, 2 triples,
    and 8 RBI's."

    Faculty and staff may pick up their new ID stickers from
    their department's Administrative Associate; Graduate Students
    stickers are available at the University Registrar's Office,
    246 Church Street, and at the Deputy Registrar's Office, HGS 140.
