Engineering Commencement 2003:
It poured Monday, May 26, but not on the Engineering
Commencement ceremonies which, to everyone's delight, were
held inside. Davis Auditorium was brimming with graduates
and their proud family members and friends (after distributing
200 programs, we ran out). Almost all Engineering graduates
were present to accept their diploma and an Engineering lapel pin
to remind them of their days at Yale Engineering. The Dean and
the Director of Educational Affairs greeted our beaming graduates
and their happy entourages, and the Director of Graduate Studies
and each of the Directors of Undergraduate Studies, colorful in their
various academic finery, said a few words about most of our graduates
as they handed out diplomas to our 53 Bachelor's, 34 Master's
(27 of whom are going on to the Ph.D.), and 5 Ph.D. degree recipients.

Final doctoral examinations:
Peter Fong: "Development and Characterization of Normoxic
Polymer Gels for Ionizing Radiation Dosimetry." Committee:
Prof. John Gore, Prof. Mark Saltzman, and Prof. Francesco
     d'Errico.
    Tues., June 3, 4:00 pm, Becton 508.

    May 27.

Don't send by US Mail and get it there faster:
If you send a letter to another Yale department by US Mail
rather than by Campus Mail, you will delay its delivery and
waste postage. And it still will be delivered to that other
department by none other than--Campus Mail! This is how it works:
The mail you sent by US Mail will be trucked to Wallingford where
it will be sorted. If you addressed the envelope with the department's
name and street address (instead of the PO Box number), your mail
will have to be sorted by hand (much slower). After the mail has
been sorted, your letter will be delivered to Yale's Campus Mail. There
it will get sorted  again. After that, Campus Mail will deliver your
letter to that other Yale department. Had you sent your letter by
Campus Mail, you would have skipped the useless back and forth to
Wallingford for sorting, and your mail would have reached its
    destination sooner.

Wish to become part of the Friendship Force?
President of the Friendship Force of Southern Connecticut Barbara
Skolones, Administrative Assistant in ChE, welcomes your interest in
hosting a husband and wife from Merseburg, Germany, for a week
in September (15-22) in order to provide them with an opportunity
to get to know the American way of life. (Hosts become eligible to
be hosted in turn in a foreign country for one or more weeks). Home
Hosts provide a bedroom, most meals, and some time with their families.
Hosts may (but do not need to) take part in planned activities like
trips to museums, potluck dinners, welcome and farewell dinners, etc.
Home Hosts have to be screened and to attend a meeting Aug. 24.
Day Hosts make themselves available during the day; they transport
the visitors to planned activities or, if there are no planned activities,
just spend the day with the visitors. For more on the Friendship Force
