Commencement honors:
Applied
Physics alumna receives the Wilbur Cross Medal:
The research done by Julia Phillips '81 Ph.D.
at Bell Laboratories
has led to key advances in semiconductor
technology. Currently,
she is responsible for several critical programs at
Sandia
National Laboratories. Dr. Phillips also serves on
numerous
service and advisory boards of national agencies
and
professional societies and her leadership in
promoting science
education for young women was recognized by the
first U.S.
Department of Labor Woman's Bureau Horizon Award.
Two of ours received Prize Teaching Fellowships:
Matthew Reese, AP, and Sven Ude, ChE,
received Prize
Teaching Fellowships, among the highest honors that
a
graduate student can attain at Yale. This
Fellowship includes
$2,000 and a dinner in honor of the 2004-05 Prize
Teaching
Fellows hosted in the fall by the Dean of the
Graduate School.
An
Engineering Student Center is now reality!
The J. Robert Mann Jr. Engineering Center was

Homeland Security selects BME grad student Stern:
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security, through
the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education,
ORISE,
has selected Eric Stern, Biomedical Engineering graduate

student with
Prof. Mark Reed, EE, to receive a Fellowship.

Eric Stern was
chosen from among 450 applicants in recognition
-
of his
outstanding academic record and his desire to explore
the
mission and pursue the objectives of the Department of
Homeland
Security.

22 Yale Engineering golfers had a ball:
The team of Tom Boone '04 Ph.D., Captain, Jim Hyland, Wei
Wei Deng,
and Yuenan Wang won the nine hole scramble
tournament
with 3 under par. Tied for second place with even
par were
the teams captained by Prof. Mitchell Smooke, ME,
and
Facilities Project Manager Mr. Joseph Carvalho. If

Mason elevator shut for repairs:
The Mason elevator will be unusable from June 1 to
September.

Luigi Frunzio, Associate Research Scientist, and
Giusy Frunzio
are the proud parents of a daughter, Paola, born
May 24.
They also have a son, Carlo.
