Congratulations:
--Goldwater scholarship: Vanessa C. Wood '05, AP,
is a winner of the Goldwater Scholarship, the premier
undergraduate award of its type in mathematics, science,
and engineering. The 161 men and 149 women 2004 Goldwater
Scholars were selected for academic merit from 1,113 candidates
nationwide. Vanessa Wood is interested in laser optics,
specifically, microcavity lasers for applications ranging
    from biosensing to quantum computation.

The scholarship covers the cost of tuition, fees, books,
and also room and board up to $7,500 a year.

--NNIN REU internship at Stanford: Carl Dietz '05, AP, won
an internship sponsored by NSF at the Stanford Nanofabrication
Facility. He will do research on fabrication of a V-groove
optical fiber laser half-coupler. The internship provides
a $3,800 stipend and covers travel and housing.
