Dr. Guosheng Cheng joined Prof. Mark Reed's,
EE, group Feb. 1
as an Associate Research Scientist. Dr. Cheng comes
to us from
the Chemistry Department at the University of
California at
Santa Barbara.
Thomas Boone Jr. joined Prof. Jerry Woodall's,
EE, group Feb. 1
as a Postdoctoral Associate. He has met all
requirements for his
Ph.D. in '04.
WIRED
Rave Awards nominee:
Every year, WIRED Magazine selects "leading
thinkers and doers"
in 14 categories for its WIRED Rave Awards. Prof.
Erin Lavik, BME,
is one of the 2004 nominees in the "Medical
Scientist" category for
her research on spinal cord regeneration.
Where
will Prof. Narendra go next?
Last December, Prof. Kumpati Narendra, EE, was
honored for
his pioneering contributions to Control Theory in
India by
Osmania University's Institution of Electronics and
Telecommunication
Engineers and the Department of Electronics and
Communication
Engineering (he also gave several lectures during
that visit). The
week of March 8, Prof. Narendra will be at the
University of Santiago
in Chile, where he has been invited to give talks to
the Chilean wine
industry on the applications of artificial neural
networks (ANN) to
the wine industry. In April, Prof. Narendra will be
giving keynote
presentations at workshops in England and
Scotland, and May
will see him engaged in scientific discussions in
Ireland and
England.

Yale/Olin-Bayer/New Haven Science Fair that will be
held
March 8 and 9 in Woolsey Hall.
The community-minded graduate students who were
mentors

Summer
internships:
Some Yale alumni from Cleveland, OH, have
organized
"Bulldogs on the Cuyahoga, a program that
"[brings] 30-40 Yale
undergraduates to Cleveland each summer for
high-quality
internships, civic engagement, alumni
mentorship, and social
events to introduce them to the professional,
civic, and
personal offerings in Northeast Ohio."
Colgate and Case alumni
have partnered in this program, and students
from all three
institutions will live together and interact
throughout the
summer. Students get paid, receive free housing
at Case
Western Reserve University, and enjoy a summer
full of civic

Babysitting Service:
The Women Faculty Forum and Yale WorkLife
Program
have launched a Yale Babysitting Service (YBS).
Babysitting
will be provided by Yale students who will be
available to
take chare of children after the childcare
center closes, Saturday
nights, and also on an ongoing basis. YBS is
restricted to
members of the Yale community. See
