Prof. Narendra receives AACC lifetime award:
The American Automatic Control Council (AACC), an
association of the control systems divisions of eight member
societies--AIAA, AIChE, ASCE, ASME, AISE, IEEE, ISA, SCS--
and the U.S. National Member Organization of IFAC
(International Federation of Automatic Control), has
honored Prof. Kumpati Narendra, EE, with their Richard
    E. Bellman Control Heritage Award "for pioneering
contributions to stability theory, adaptive and learning
systems theory, and for inspiring leadership as mentor,
advisor, and teacher over a period spanning four decades."
This is AACC's highest recognition of professional achievement
for U.S. control systems engineers and scientists for
contributions to the theory or applications of automatic
control and AACC's only award to an individual for lifetime
contributions to control and systems engineering.
Prof. Narendra will accept his award at the American
Control Conference (ACC) in Denver, CO, in June.

Doctoral area examination:
Sven Ude, "Measurement and Properties of Nanometer
Particles in the Gas Phase." Committee: Prof. Juan de
la Mora, Prof. Daniel Rosner, Prof. John Walz.
    Thurs., April 3, 10:30 am, Watson 000.

ME student receives ASME award:
Dr. Beth Anne Bennett, ME, Prof. B.T. Chu, ME,
Mr. Glenn Weston-Murphy, ME, seven ME majors,
and an ME grad student attended a dinner March 27 at
the Bass Center, sponsored by the New Haven ASME,
the Fairfield ASME, and the Connecticut chapter of
the Society of Manufacturing Engineers. On the agenda
was a talk on nuclear safety, meeting mechanical
engineers from Connecticut industries, and a getting
acquainted by ME majors from different educational
institutions. Mike Murphy '03 received an award from
the New Haven ASME for leadership in Yale's ME program.
Dr. Bennett, one of the organizers of the event, serves as
the treasurer of the New Haven ASME chapter.
ME seeks two additional Junior faculty members:
    - Junior faculty appointment in fluid and thermal sciences.
Preference for expertise in experimental aspects of fluids
and thermal sciences. Areas of research interest include
traditional thermo-fluids topics and emerging fields like
    micro-fluidics and biological flows.

-Junior faculty appointment in the area of mechanical
    engineering design.
The ideal candidate would have a strong interest in
teaching design and design methodology and a research
background in any of the following areas: mechatronics,
    robotics, sensors, electromechanical systems, kinematics,
and dynamics of machinery, design of the human-computer
    interface.
Deadline for applications: April 30, 2003. For more, visit
