Welcome:
Dr. Hoo-Jeong Lee has joined us 12/1/03 from Lucent
Technologies as Associate Research Scientist and will be working
with Prof. Ainissa Ramirez, ME. Dr. Lee brings expertise in
MEMS, materials characterization (TEM) and mechanical properties
of thin films as interests in art, theater, and golf. Dr. Lee earned
his Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering in 1998 at
    Stanford University.

Final doctoral examination:
Thomas Boone: "High-Speed Optical Modulation Techniques
Incorporating Heavy Doping and Lateral Drift Developed in Gallium
Arsenide." Committee: Prof. Jerry Woodall, Prof. T.P. Ma,
    and Prof. Jung Han.
    Mon., Dec. 15, 1:30 pm, Mason 107.

More student projects:
Two teams of students taking ME 489a "Mechanical Design:
Process and Implementation," taught by Prof. David LaVan, will
present their design-to-working prototype results of an aerodynamically
adaptive wheel fairing for the Team Lux solar car and a device to
provide easy entry/exit into a car for the elderly or for persons
    with limited flexibility/mobility.
    Tues., Dec. 16, 5:00 pm, Dunham 220.

Construction:
The Dec. 11 groundbreaking for the Engineering Research Building,
to be located between Watson and the canal, has started a major
construction project. Parking Lot 43 is gone forever and the week
of Dec. 15 will see a temporary access road being built from Trumbull
Street to the construction site. The road will cross in front of the
Statistics building and go across the canal (temporarily filled in).
A fence will encircle the site. Digging of the foundation will start
    about Jan. 7.

The new building will house "specialty research space" (e.g., the
basement is designed for minimum vibration) for faculty from
various departments. The building will also have faculty offices
and some technical support and administrative space.

The shell of the five-floor building will be finished November 2004.
The dedication of the new building will be November 2005.

…and renovations:
Furious renovation will be unleashed during the Winter Recess
on the basement level of Mason Lab. When the spring term starts,
ME teaching labs (including the mechanical design studio and
the student fabrication shop currently in Dunham 124 and
Becton CO 38) will be located in Mason.

Mason 117 is also being renovated to house ChE and EnvE
    teaching labs.

Building renovation updates will be announced at
    <www.eng.yale.edu/project>

Winter recess begins Sat., Dec. 20, 5:30 pm.

Grad student featured in "Ivy on Ice":
Jaimee Dong, EnvE grad student, is one of the skaters
featured in "Ivy on Ice," a skating show organized by the
Yale Collegiate Figure Skating Club at Ingalls Rink. The show,
a benefit for the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society, will also
feature U.S. National Competitors from the Figure Skating
Club of Boston and a guest appearance by the Yale Alley Cats.
