To serve on ANS board of directors:
Dr. Yehia Khalil, Lecturer in ChE, has been selected to serve on the
national American Nuclear Society (ANS) Board of Directors.
The selection committee included the President of the American
Nuclear Society, members of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory
Commission (NRC) and the Department of Energy (DOE).

An expert of probabilistic risk assessment (PRA) and nuclear
safety, Dr. Khalil was a recipient of the DOE 2003 Recognition
Award for technical expertise in risk assessment and for his
support of nuclear engineering education research (NEER)
programs. Dr. Khalil is the Chair of the American Nuclear
    Society in Connecticut.

Prof. LaVan receives Moore Fund award:
Prof. David LaVan, ME, will use his Moore Fund award
    to acquire a five-year, multi-seat license for Working Model/Nastran
4D software. This software will enable students in ME 185 and
ME 489 design classes to design, build, animate, and analyze
complex mechanisms in a virtual environment. The software
tools combine advanced kinematic and finite element capabilities
with an intuitive graphical interface that lets a designer "drag and
drop" basic elements of mechanisms (pivots, motors, levers, etc.)
    into a workspace.

The Moore Fund supports the development of new methods and
materials for basic courses and for the design of new courses.

Sandia in Dunham 220 Jan. 27:
Representatives from Sandia National Laboratories will give
a presentation Tues., Jan. 27, 5:00 pm, Dunham 220, about
Sandia facilities in California and New Mexico. Sandia laboratories
focus on biotechnology, chemical and biological threat responses,
combustion and renewable energy, distributed information systems
and information protection, environmental sciences, materials
and engineering sciences, microsystems technologies, and
systems Engineering. For an interview with Sandia, graduate
students should contact <cara.gibilisco@yale.edu> and undergraduates
    should contact <yuri.shane@yale.edu> Also visit

Yale Engineering Design Team, new:
Foster your creative-design and building talents, say Daniel Wiznia '06, ME,
James Salzano '06, ME, and Jerry Morones '06, EE, organizers of
a new club for students who are interested in innovation, design,
and construction of vehicles that drive, swim (above and under water)
or fly, etc. Exciting competitions will be part of the club's activities.
Prof. David LaVan, ME, has agreed to be the Team's faculty adviser.
The first meeting is Mon., Jan. 26, 7:00 pm, basement of WLH, 100 Wall Street.
    Pizza? Yes.
