Prof. Smooke awarded A. K. Oppenheim Prize in Japan
On
July 30, 2003, in Hakone, Japan, Prof. Mitchell Smooke, ME,
received the A. K. Oppenheim Prize from the Institute for the
Dynamics of Explosions and Reactive Systems, IDERS.
The prize was awarded "For computational modeling of
laminar
flames with detailed transport and multi-step kinetics,
leading
to a quantitative analysis and understanding of flame
structure,
extinction and pollutant formation, with important
implications
in turbulent combustion as well." According to the
President
of IDERS, the A.K. Oppenheim Prize is presented for
"brilliant
contributions to the theoretical or interpretive aspects of
the
dynamics of explosions and reactive systems."
