| One of the nation’s outstanding young engineers Prof. Janet Pan, Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering and Applied Physics, was one of the 88 of the nation's brightest young engineers selected to participate in the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) 11th annual Frontiers of Engineering symposium. The Sept. 21-24, 2005, event brought together young engineers rom industry, academia, and government from across the country who are performing cutting-edge engineering research and technical work in a variety of disciplines. The participants were chosen from 220 candidates nominated by fellow engineers or organizations. The goal of the meetings, according to the NAE, is "to introduce these outstanding engineers (ages 30-45) to each other, and through this interaction facilitate collaboration in engineering, the transfer of new techniques and approaches across fields, and establishment of contacts among the next generation of engineering leaders." The 2005 Frontiers of Engineering, held at the GE Global Research Center in Niskayuna, N.Y., explored aspects of ID and verification technologies, the engineering of complex systems, engineering for developing communities, and energy. Shirley Ann Jackson, President of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute was a featured speaker. Dr. Jackson has served as chair of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission and worked in the field of theoretical physics at both AT&T Bell Laboratories and Rutgers University. Young faculty from Yale's Faculty of Engineering have established at presence at NAE's Frontiers of Engineering. In 2004, NAE selected Prof. Erin Lavik, Assistant Professor of Biomedical Engineering, and Prof. Ainissa Ramirez, Assistant Professor of Biomedical Engineering, to participate among the nation's engineers. Prof. Charles Ahn, now Associate Professor of Applied Physics, and Prof. Robert Schoelkopf, now Professor of Applied Physics and Physics, were similarly acknowledged in 2002. The latter was invited to chair a session at NAE's 2003 Frontiers of Engineering. |
