July 2004. Robert J. Birgeneau '65 M.S., '66 Ph.D., a member of the Yale Faculty of Engineering Senior Advisory Committee, was appointed the new chancellor of the University of California at Berkeley. 

Dr. Birgeneau had previously served as President of the University of Toronto and as Dean of Science at MIT.
