Assignment 8: Proof of Concept

This Week Sign-Up for a Consulting Meetings With The TAs

In these meeting you will go over the objective of your proof of concept test, and how you will achieve it. Bring your design notebook, and any hardware you are working on. The meetings will be held in the lab. You should bring for the meeting:

A brief summary of your proof of concept objectives. The proof of concept is meant to reduce risk in your design, by building a component of your. Carefully select which component of your machine you will work on to reduce risk.

Include:

• A description of your machine concept, with a simple sketch.

• What are the potential failure modes in your design

• What are the high risk issues in your design

• What will be built for the proof of concept. Explain why you choose that option, and what your risk reduction strategy is.

• How will you evaluate your proof of concept hardware. Specifically, how will you make your test as realistic as possible considering that the rest of the machine is not yet built.

• What you plan to build in lab this week in preparation for the Proof of Concept test in the following week.

• Don’t worry if you think you might change your overall machine concept. Select one concept for now, and based on the results of your proof of concept testing you can re-evaluate your decision.

Due Next Week in Lab (Feb. 23 &24)

Demonstrate the proof of concept hardware. Turn in the write-up of the issues listed above. By the end of lab, write up an evaluation of your hardware performance. Discuss any failures in the performance, and what are the potential causes. Also discuss in what ways was your proof of concept test not identical to the final machine operating conditions.
