The Laboratory of

David A. LaVan, P.E., Ph.D.

My laboratory at Yale University works in several areas related to the characterization, development, and evaluation of materials and devices for use in microsystems (and nano and macro systems), with particular interest in biomedical applications.

I am the Director of the Mechanical Engineering Design Program and teach Machine Design and Forensic Engineering.  Forensic Engineering is based on my personal experiences consulting and performing failure analysis for a variety of clients.

I am a member of Yale's Interdepartmental Neuroscience Program (INP) and The Combined Program in the Biological & Biomedical Sciences (BBS).

The P.E. after my name signifies that I am a registered professional engineer.

I received a B.S. in Materials Science from the University of Florida in 1991, a M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Florida in 1994 working with Ali Seireg, and a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from The Johns Hopkins University in 1998 working with William N. Sharpe, Jr.  I have worked as an engineer, in technical consulting, as a post doc and staff at Sandia National Laboratory, and as a research fellow in Robert Langer's lab at MIT and Harvard-Children's Hospital before joining Yale in 2003.
