Birgit Fischer was born in Saarbruecken in Germany. She obtained her diploma in Chemistry at the Saarland University in 2002. In 2006 she finished her PhD on the synthesis and characterization of magnetic colloids in Physical Chemistry of Prof. Hempelmann. After a short-term Postdoc at the Experimental Physics in Bayreuth, she is currently working at the Department of Electrical Engineering at the Yale University.

Her research focuses on the synthesis and characterization of magnetic colloids. The main goal on her research is to synthesis water based ferrofluids which are suitable for biological applications in microfluidic devices.
