Getting Started at Yale - Checklist

Email Account

Your email will be set up with the University "Pantheon" system. Steps to make this happen: (1) Discover your "NetID" from your department administrator. (2)  Request email account using your "NetID" by your department administrator or business office. You will receive a PIN number which you must use to activate your NetID -- to define a password for your NetID. (3) The Pantheon account should be available approximately 20 minutes later.

Alternative Process: Visit the University ITS Accounts Office at 221 Whitney Avenue with your Yale ID card or letter of appointment.

Email Address
Your email address will be first-name.last-name@yale.edu if that is unique.  If this address is already taken, a variant like first-name.initial.last-name@yale.edu will be selected for you.
Sending and Receiving Email

(1) From any web browser, go to https://www.mail.yale.edu (note https), or

(2) From your Mac or PC computer, use Eudora (POPmail) or Netscape Communicator (IMAP) to securely connect to Pantheon's server.  See http://edserv05.its.yale.edu/ras/eudorapc.htm or http://www.yale.edu/email/netscape/netscape_imap.html for more information.

Dial-in Access to Yale

(1) You may use any commercial Internet Service Provider, from which you can connect to most Yale network services, such as https://www.mail.yale.edu.  This method is required if you want high-speed DSL or cable modem service.

(2) You may enroll for a Yale PPP dial-in account at ITS User Accounts, 221 Whitney Ave.  This currently provides up to 56 Kbps service for a fee of $10 per month.  ITS provides a software CD for installation on your computer.

Your Office Computer
The most common recommendation is a Dell Computer desktop system using Microsoft Windows 2000 Pro or Windows XP pro (not home edition), although Macintosh and Linux solutions and others are also available.  Engineering IT will provide standard software installation if requested.
Your Office or Laboratory Network Connection
Many offices and labs are fully connected, but if a new network connection is required, please contact Andy Morcus (432-4206, andy.morcus@yale.edu ).
