Getting the Internet at home


  Yale PPP Dial-In
- Cost: $12 / month, unlimited hours
- Speed: Up to 56 kb/s, depending on your line quality
- New Haven phone numbers only.  (Long distance outside local area.)
- Automatic "Yale" identity.  (VPN not required)
- Carries TCP/IP and AppleTalk traffic
- Hardware required: standard modem
- Yale account billing
 
  Commercial PPP Dial-In
- Cost: $20 +/- per month, various plans
- Typical vendors: Earthlink, AT&T, AOL
- Speed:  Up to 56 kb/s, depending on your line quality
- May provide local access numbers throughout US or even internationally
- No "Yale" identity unless using Yale VPN service.
- For TCP/IP only
- Hardware required: standard modem
 
  Broadband Commercial DSL Service
- Cost $40-50+ per month
- Typical vendors: SNET or other ISPs using SNET wires
- Speed: 384 - 1,000+ kb/s download, depending on distance and line quality.  128 kb/s upload
- Continuous Internet connection
- No "Yale" identity unless using Yale VPN service.
- For TCP/IP only
- Hardware required: vendor supplied DSL modem, computer Ethernet port
- More complex installation & configuration
- Yale billing available from SNET
 
  Broadband Commercial Cable Modem Service
- Cost $40-50+ per month
- Typical vendors: AT&T or Comcast
- Speed: 1,000+ kb/s download. Bandwidth shared among your neighbors. Less distance dependent than DSL.
- Continuous Internet connection
- No "Yale" identity unless using Yale VPN service.
- For TCP/IP only
- Hardware required: vendor supplied cable modem, computer Ethernet port
- More complex installation & configuration
