1998

A new major in Environmental Engineering established.

1999

Katepalli R. Sreenivasan elected to the National Academy of Engineering for “the application of modern non-linear dynamics to turbulent flows.” In 1995 he was given the Otto Laporte Award by the American Physical Society.

A new undergraduate major in Biomedical Engineering approved by the Yale College faculty. Courses taught both by faculty in Engineering and in the Medical School. A plan to expand the faculty in Biomedical Engineering announced by President Levin in December 1999, and in 2001 the Graduate School approved a Ph.D. program.

2000

Paul A. Fleury appointed Dean of the Faculty of Engineering. A member of the National Academy of Engineering and of the National Academy of Engineering, Fleury had spent more than 30 years in research and management at Bell Laboratories and Sandia National Laboratories prior to joining Yale. 

A gift of $24 M received from John Malone ’63 for a new Engineering research building.
