1982Ira B. Bernstein received the James Clerk Maxwell prize given by the American Physical Society For his contributions to the theory of plasma. His incisive studies of physics of waves, stability and transport have provided essential guidance to a generation of colleagues and disciples. He was elected a member of the National Academy of Science in 1984. Peter P. Wegener received the Otto Laporte Memorial Lecture Prize by the American Physical Society in recognition of his contributions to fluid dynamics. The Chemical Engineering major was accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), which had replaced ECPD in 1980. Concurrently, the major in Electric Science and Engineering was re-accredited as Electrical Engineering. In 1983 the program in Engineering Mechanics was re-accredited as Mechanical Engineering. 1984Center for Ultrasonics and Sonics established. Initial research subjects included medical applications of ultrasound, signal processing, sensors for robot systems, underwater acoustics and acoustic levitation. Robert E. Apfel and Kenneth J. Taylor (Diagnostic Radiology) co-directors. Center for Applied Mechanics established. Initial research subjects included transport processes in flows, combustion instability, dynamical systems, geofluid mechanics, mechanical behavior of materials and biological systems. P.P. Wegener director, K.R. Sreenivasan associate director. |
