1907Champion Herbert Mathewson (1881-1972) appointed to the faculty of the Scienti€c School. Author of a paper on the microscopic mechanism of plastic flow upon which all modern physical metallurgy is based. The Recrystallization of Cold Worked Alpha Brass on Annealing was published in 1916. In 1914 he started a cooperative research program with the metals industry. Graduate instruction was given to selected students nominally in the employ of participating companies. The choice of copper based alloys for many of his experimental researches lay in considerable measure upon the location of New Haven close to the Naugatuck valley, the brass center of the world. 1909Lester Paige Breckenridge appointed Professor of Mechanical Engineering. Breckenridge was well known for his researches on the fuel efficiencies of various engines and steam boilers. He was engaged by the Federal Government for designs at the Louisiana Exposition. In 1910 he initiated the Senior Inspection trip, held during spring break. It was at this time that engineering students had the opportunity to visit the premier industrial establishments of the nation. This annual event was terminated in 1941. |
