1901Programs initiated titled Engineering preparatory to Mining and Chemistry preparatory to Metallurgy. This event led to the formation of the department of Metallurgy. 1902Yale University awarded an honorary degree to Lord Kelvin (1824-1907). The citation reads: You have joined the different regions of the earth by your investigations of the submarine cable; you have joined the different realms of human thought by your contributions to physical theory. We confer upon you the degree of Doctor of Laws and admit you to all its rights and privileges. The first course in Industrial Chemistry given in the Sheffield School. This was the precursor to the establishment of the department of Chemical Engineering in 1926. 1903John Hays Hammond (1855-1936), a distinguished mining engineer, survivor of the Boer war and Sheff graduate, endowed the program in mining and metallurgy and accepted a Professorship in the School. In 1906 the Hammond Laboratory of Metallurgy was dedicated. |
