1876

Manfield Merriman (1848-1925) appointed Professor of Civil Engineering. He was an author of A Treatise on Hydraulics and on the Strength of Materials, a seminal text of its time.

1877

August Jay DuBois (1849-1907) appointed Professor of Mechanical Engineering. Author of:

  • A New Method of Graphical Statics, 1876
  • The Stresses in Framed Structures, 1883 (11 editions)
  • The Elements of Mechanics, 3 volumes 1893
  • Mechanics of Engineering, 2 volumes, 1908.

These were the standard texts in many schools of engineering.
