Professor George J. Brush was elected to the National Academy of Science.
1870
Appointment of William P. Trowbridge (1828-1892), Professor of Mechanical Engineering. In 1872 he published the first cantilever bridge design, for a Blackwell Island Bridge to connect Manhattan and Queens. At the same site, the Queensboro Bridge of modified cantilever design was completed in 1909. He was elected to National Academy of Science in 1872.
