The course of study leading to a Bachelor of Philosophy becomes a stand-alone three year undergraduate program (in the fashion of European Higher Education). The degree titled Civil Engineering remains a graduate degree.

Appointment of Chester S. Lyman (1814-1899), Professor of Industrial Mechanics. He was an inventor of numerous surveying and astronomical instruments.

1860

The Scientific School renamed in Sheffield’s honor.

On a suggestion by the Faculty of the Scientific School the Corporation authorized the award of the degree Doctor of Philosophy for advanced students.
