- The Yale Corporation voted, that a new professorship in the
department of Philosophy and the Arts be established to be called the
Professorship of Civil Engineering.
Voted, that Professor William August Norton [1810-1883], formerly
professor at Newark College, Delaware, and then at Brown University,
be chosen as the incumbent of the professorship. Voted, that none of
the existing funds of the College be applied in support of this professorship.
Editorial note: During the middle of the 19th century Yale College was
on the edge of total bankruptcy.
- The American Society of Civil Engineering (ASCE) founded.
- First Class, numbering six, were awarded the graduate degree of Bachelor
of Philosophy by the School of Applied Chemistry.

The term The (Yale) Scientific School first used by the Yale
Corporation in describing appointments to the School of Applied Chemistry
and the School of Engineering.
