Title: Control and Optimization of Air Traffic Flows
Abstract: The design and efficient operation of air transportation systems pose a number of control and optimization challenges, spanning multiple spatial and time-scales. We would like to increase the efficiency of operations and their robustness to weather disruptions, while simultaneously maintaining safety, limiting environmental impact, and considering multiple-stakeholder objectives. I will explore these issues through some recent results in traffic flow management and scheduling, and also discuss the tradeoffs between centralized approaches and methods that incorporate the current hierarchical distribution of control authority.
