Josiah Willard Gibbs (1839-1903)

Engineering began at Yale in 1852 with a course on civil engineering. Yale awarded the first engineering Ph.D. in the United States. The recipient was J. Willard Gibbs 1858 B.S., 1863 Ph.D., who would become one of this country's greatest scientists. The U.S. Postal Service honored Gibbs with a stamp in 2005.

Josiah Willard Gibbs received the first Ph.D. in Engineering in the U.S., in 1863, for his thesis entitled "On the Shape of Teeth in Spur Gearing." The granting institution was Yale University, one of the first institutions of higher education in the U.S. to offer programs in engineering, starting in 1852. Dr. Gibbs became a faculty member at Yale and went on to make contributions in thermodynamics, vector analysis, and statistical mechanics, becoming the preeminent American scientist of his time.
