The Department of Applied Physics prepares students for academic and industrial careers at the forefront of science and technology. Teaching and research are focused on fundamental issues in condensed matter and optical physics and on the practical application of these concepts and techniques to technology. This balance between fundamental science and application makes our program highly interdisciplinary, having strong collaborations with Physics, Chemistry, Electrical, Mechanical, Chemical, and Biomedical Engineering.

As undergraduates at Yale University, our students receive a world-renowned liberal arts and sciences education that emphasizes the importance of communication skills and an awareness of the social, political, and economic ramifications of science and technology.

Applied Physics is a department within the School of Engineering & Applied Science. Our ten primary faculty also have joint appointments with the Department of Physics. Fifteen additional Yale faculty have joint appointments with Applied Physics.

The Department of Applied Physics offers degree programs leading to the B.A., B.S., M.S., and Ph.D.
