John Baecher Butt
’58 M.E. ’60 Ph.D.
YSEA Hall of Achievement
Advancement of Basic and Applied Science – Awarded 2000
After receiving his Bachelor of Science degree from Clemson University in 1956, John Butt earned his masters and doctorate degrees in chemical engineering at Yale. He taught chemical engineering first at Yale, then moved to Northwestern University in 1961. Butt’s career spanned the globe with teaching assignments in Belgium and in Germany as well as major U.S. universities including the University of Texas and the University of California. He has consulted with numerous international companies on his specialty: reaction engineering.
Butt’s understanding of catalytic reaction processes have led to improved chemical manufacturing operations in many countries and to deep understanding of the mechanism of catalyst poisoning.
Butt has received the Colburn Award, the Professional Progress Award, the E. B. Masted Award and the Humbolt Senior Science Prize for excellence in chemical engineering. He is a fellow of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers and professor emeritus at Northwestern. He has authored over 200 scholarly papers and written three books including a standard textbook for chemical engineering:
