Engineering Convocation
This what
Prof. Michael Loewenberg said at the 2005 Commencement Engineering
Convocation:
All of our
graduating seniors participated in the chemical engineering senior
design project:
Direct Atmospheric extraction of carbon
dioxide.
The project was
assigned from the American Institute of Chemical Engineers and is regarded
as the gold standard in chemical engineering design projects.
This year, the
project dealt with a timely problem--global warming by greenhouse gases.
Managing CO2 emissions is now a global priority, as predictions of future
energy consumption show a continuing rise in CO2 concentration in
the atmosphere.
There are
several abatement alternatives for carbon emissions including more efficient
use of energy, use of carbon-free energy sources (nuclear, fusion, wind,
solar, and hydropower), and capture of CO2 at point sources or
from the atmosphere.
Presumably, the
US Department of Energy is particularly interested in direct atmospheric
extraction, because this is best suited for dealing with carbon emissions
from the transportation sector, meaning that you may continue to drive
around in your Hummer.
In their
project, the students were to design a plant for direct extraction of CO2
from the atmosphere. Unfortunately, our students showed that this approach
is not economically feasible. So, as for your Hummer... ok, it will have to
be H2-powered.
