About
the Symposium
The 78th meeting of the American Chemical
Society’s Colloid and Surface Science Division will be held June 20 – 23,
2004 at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut. The meeting will
consist of technical sessions organized around 11 broad topics, ranging
from such traditional topics as Colloidal Dispersions, Self-Assembling
Systems, and Dynamic Behavior of Complex Fluids, to more ‘novel’ and timely
sessions in such areas as Synthesis and Applications of Nanoparticles and
Nanostructures, Aerosol Science and Technology, and Microfluidics.
The symposium will also pay tribute to
the many contributions of J. Willard Gibbs to the fields of colloids and
surface science by having one of our plenary talks devoted to a review of
Gibbs' life. Gibbs spent his entire career at Yale and is actually
buried near the center of campus.
New Haven is a vibrant town with many
cultural attractions, essentially centered around Yale. These include
museums, theaters, and numerous outstanding restaurants. In addition,
each year the city hosts a two-week International Festival of Arts and
Ideas, which features numerous performances in music, dance, theater,
visual arts, etc. and the 2004 colloids symposium will coincide with this
festival.
We thus promise a symposium that is
technically stimulating in a rich cultural environment, and we look forward
to seeing you in New Haven!
NOTE: the 78th
Colloid and Surface Science Symposium will directly follow two other conferences
that may be of interest. First, the 2004 International Electrokinetics
Conference (ELKIN 2004) will be held June 13-17 at Carnegie Mellon
University in Pittsburgh, PA (see www.andrew.cmu.edu/user/dcprieve/ELKIN/index.htm).
Second, the Fifth International Symposium on
Polyelectrolytes (Polyelectrolytes 2004) will be held June 14-18 at the
University of Massachusetts in Amherst, MA (see www.pse.umass.edu/polyelectrolytes2004).
